Summer Experience in Engineering & Medicine:
This program is designed to introduce high school students to the fields of science, engineering and medicine, by involving them in laboratory research. This program spans a period of 3 weeks, with week 1 introducing the student to principles and philosophy of laboratory investigation, concepts of cardiovascular physiology and fundamentals of biomedical engineering. Week 2 is focused on developing hands on experience in the laboratory, directly working under the mentorship of a senior laboratory member and describing a project. Week 3 is independent experience, where the student conducts experiments to complete the project and make a presentation to the entire laboratory. Students are accepted to this program from May 1 - June 15th, and are expected to complete their internship no later than August 1st. A maximum of 5 students are accepted each summer, so that individual emphasis on the student is possible. Interested students are encouraged to email Dr.Padala.
Surg 30 elective in cardiovascular research (offered via the Emory School of Medicine):
Dr.Padala offers a 1-month elective for medical students interested in cardio-thoracic surgery as a medical career. This elective is offered through the Emory School of Medicine and medical students are encouraged to apply to this elective via the formal process established by the school. The emphasis of this elective is on introducing cardiovascular physiology and surgery to the students by giving them hands on experience in cardiac surgery in animal models and weekly meetings with the clinical cardiac surgeons that collaborate with our laboratory.
